it's who we are, its what we do

my dear and lovely friend brenda had a craft day at her house right before christmas and taught us how to make melt and pour soap.  ella made two little soaps for home, and one soap for each of her teachers.  she was so proud to hand out her gifts which she had made with her very own hands.

and ever since then, every few weeks, she would ask me, "mama, do you denember when we went to brenda's house and she taught us to make soap?  that was so much fun, mama.  can we do that again some time?"

so last week, i got some supplies and over the weekend ella and i made more soaps.  we had a blast, made a big mess, and ended up with 5.5 bars of soap.  :)

the thing is, we don't use much soap here, and one little bar can last a long time. but while we were pouring our soaps into molds, ella looked up at me with her beaming little smile and said, "we make things, mama.  because we're makers."

it's just that simple.  we could just buy the things we need or want.  but we're makers.  so we make things.

how lovely, to be a maker--to be a colleague with the one who made everything.  i pray ella can hang onto this image of herself, i pray with all my heart that the world doesn't strip her of it.  because it would be a great blessing to always know you have the spark of the divine within you.  a girl could go a long way on just that.
